Bishop Serves As A Lunch Buddy exerpts from Article by Christy Barritt
Pastor Fred Hill and Chaplain Maurice Hilliard know the importance of children having
male role models in their lives. Both grew up without fathers.
Today, both participate in the Lunch Buddy program at Carver Intermediate. They want
to influence children who may not have a strong male influence in their lives.
The Lunch Buddy program pairs select students with caring adults from the community.
Twice a month, the “buddies” get together for lunch, where they’re able to talk and become
friends. After lunch, they can choose an activity to do together, anything from going to
the library or outside to the playground.

Hill, pastor of Emmanuel Way of the Cross Church, which meets at Carver, has mentored
the same student for three years.
"I realize now that I was at a disadvantage by not having a father," said Hill, a
Georgetown resident. "When I was given the opportunity to be a father, I realized
it’s a vital role. It's a double blessing to be able to reach beyond the family and
to mentor a child in the same manner that I wished someone had taken the time to mentor me."
